what/which vag com do i need i have borrowed my mates obd2 reader from work and its not connecting to my car!! says link error and unable to read

ive used vag-com 311.2 for a year now, with the correct cable should work fine, a obd2 reader wont work on most golfs as they obd1
MK3 GOLF GTI 8V  now converted to 16v!!

the device is a mac tools et50 ive tried it with the ignition on, car running and ignition off

It is because your car is OBD1 and not OBD2, it is a different protocol.

you need either vag-com, or a decent skyes-pickavant acr4 with the vag pod.
