18" monza replica question

Hi all, wrong section i know but its only related to mk5 so thought id post it here, Here goes- im thinking of buying some replicas from fleabay from wheelworx direct got a price of £499 with kuhmo tyres and centre caps etc in polished finish with darker grey inserts etc this guy has 99.8% positive feedback so feel should be ok only thing im unsure of is they are 8J width is this ok as thought they were normaly 7.5J
any comments or advice/help more than welcome thanks in advance again, MATT

Replica Monza II's will fit okay as they are normally 8j and 45 offset, but you need to check the quality and make before committing. Some replica's have been known to flake on the laquer very easily and end up looking bad within months.

What Kumho tyres are they? Ecsta? Again check as they will probably be budget tyres and fitting a performance car with budget tyres is like hiring the best striker in the world and then putting him in goal!

Could you not put some poor boys or whatever it's called sealent on it to seal it all up and stop the flakeing? I to am looking to get a set of 18' Monza reps on when new tyre time comes as I also have the 17' and want the 18'. No chance I'm paying what VW want for a set of genuine ones.

There was a place on ebay selling replica bbs ch inc tyres for £650.00 they looked good as well.

I think the trouble with all replicas is that they are a lot heavier than the genuine ones.  I believe BBS use 'hollow' technology to make them lighter?

Its not just like driving about with an extra passenger either.  The extra wheel weight is UNSPRUNG weight, which make a much bigger difference than sprung weight.


Just something to bear in mind.

the kuhmo tyres are ecsta ones just had email back from him now, oh decisions decisions dont no what to do now lol my tyres on my 17s are ok for a few more thousand i rekon so may jst sit on the thought for a while or failing that i might just fill my tank up and drive down there and take a look at them in the flesh even tho its a couple hundred miles away i think it could be worth the extra 50 notes to be sure they are right etc

Basically adding a kilo of unsprung weight is like adding 8kg to the total weight of the car.  Unsprung weight is not controlled by the suspension so has a disproportionate effect on the handling.  These explain it much better....

Do you think the 18" Replicas are any more heavier than the std 17" ?. I only ask as when i removed my std 17s for cleaning they weighed a ton. Not the lightest wheel i've ever lifted. Are the 17s not 'hollow' construction as per the OEM Monza 2s?

I'm not sure to be honest, in general reps are not as well made as the high end alloy manufacturers BUT thats a general statement and depends on the individual manufacturer.
