Smell the petrol
« on: 20 April 2009, 09:11 »
i have just bought my first golf gti mk3 and well impressed but since using it for couple of weeks when the car is driven then if on tick over there is a slight smell of petrol that wafts into the car
i am no mechanic but is this a problem with the carb or electrial one might be drawing to much petrol when its on tick over , wa wondering if any one else had the same problem ?

is this a problem with the carb ?

You've bought a GTI - there's an I at the end of that moniker - it indicates that you have a motor fueled by injection, not a carb.

Any petrol smell at idle could come as a result of either the vapour recovery equipment in the engine bay, which might have been hacked about, or alternatively there could be a problem with the petrol tank breather pipes at the back of the car.  Get the bonnet open and check there's not a leak under there, too - has the potential to be very dangerous.

Check all your breather hoses under the bonnet 1st, you may find one split.

I would check all your breather hoses under the bonnet.

I'd take him up on his offer - what a helpful guy!

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.
