Hi all. After the one day of good weather we had recently decided I wanted a cabrio and have always wanted one of these so picked it up on Thursday.
However after reading through all these really useful posts I decided to check the fuel filler neck and you guessed it rust rust rust.

Has anyone got any ideas where I can pick one of these up? The cabrio one seems to be different to the tin top. Oh and before you suggest I cannot fit myself, so will need to take to a garage.

Any help appreciated

Cheers
Andy

  • Hello, my name is John and I'm a dub addict.
they come up on ebay quite regularly, gsf do them as well but expensive!  filler neck is easy to change though, hose clamp holding it to the fuel tank, screw in the inner arch and 3 around the filler neck. oh and a breather hose near the top.
All you need is a few screwdrivers and a bucket to catch the fuel in :)

Thanks rubjonny. I will check out the supplier, but your talking to a novice who has never even changed an oil filter, let alone this job.....

One other thing to remember is to pull the fuse for the fuel pump and then run the car until it stops that will get rid of the pressure in the system.

Euro Car Parts used to do the filler necks too as I bought one there a couple of years ago. As already said, they aint cheap. I think the tintop is something like £30 and the cab is £100 + VAT.
......now officially dubless.

^^ thats early/late difference :)
luckily my cab is an 83 so it uses the cheapy tintop filler neck, as its all tintop golf underneath.  Later ones used a larger capacity fuel tank with modified exhaust hangers at the rear, hence the difference in filler necks

edit: same changes also happened to the Scirocco

Try GSF (German Swedish French), if no joy try this guy http://www.golfmk1.co.uk/ He does mainly tintop ones when I e-mailed him years ago but he said he did supply the necessary clips and hose to use a tintop filler neck for for a cab.
