Another one that AdamB is going to be best answering (or eyeletboy come to think of it)  :) From a general cab point of view, check the usual stuff, make sure all the switches and electrics work, check power hood works, check hood for rips and make sure it fits tight, if it's rained recently check for damp carpets. Here's a good second hand golf buying guide to have a read of http://www.matey-matey.com/golf_buying_guide.shtml it's got a section on mk1 if you go through it.  :) Hope it goes well, if it's a good one and the price is right then buy it, you will not regret it  ;D

Sportlines will be 1.8 k-jet engines, 0 - 60 will be about 9 - 10 secs, if you want speed then don't bother looking at a cab. MPG will be about 32 - 35 on average :)

Sportlines are only really a trim difference, so everything that Gibby has said will apply to it. It should have the original recaro seats in it, and these do tend to wear better than standard seats. Check the electric roof is working fine, and make sure they give you the tonneau cover for when it is down. These have an extra flap on them, to disable the roof motor when the cover is on.
The matey matey guide is a good one, and should give you a good idea what to look for. If you want to start individualising a cab, then the sportline is a good platform to start from. There are only around 450 out there, so it isnt too common either.

Well I have just done a HPI check on the car and it is a cat D, Category D Insurance Loss. Vehicle Damaged But Repairable - Insurer Decided Not To Repair

Should I walk away?

Provided you are happy with the car, and the owner is aware that this is a cat D and is prepared to reflect it in his price, I would still buy it. Once you have it, you are unlikely to want to get rid of it anyway.

if i really liked the car i'd try and find out what damage was done.other wise i'd walk away.if your unsure leave well alone, there's others out there, just keep looking.but that's me,others may have a differant opinion.

chances are any cab you look at will have some faults it is after all over ten years old. dents and scratches, resprays on some.

if its a category D its had a good knock somewhere, if he is selling it for peanuts fair enough, repairable but more than likely more than the car is worth, plenty of sportlines out there depends on the price your willing to pay. there has been 4 with in the last 6 weeks on ebay and 3 rivages you should be able to pick up a good one in the papers.

if you cant get it fix pucka dont buy it. buy one you can sit in turn the key and drive and not worry about patching it up.
You can't polish a turd

All the work has been done, it seems to be in good nick, i'm going to see it tomorro anyway and will decide then! He has is up for ?2k, which is ?1k under my budget!

I have the matey matey guide that i've read through and what to look for, was also thinking I should take a RAC or AA vehicle technician with me, what do you think?

I've been looking for a sportline for about 9 months now and this is the 1st one I have found for under ?3k. I asked you guys and gals as I wanted an outsiders view, cause I can be a little biased  ;)

This is going to be a slightly biased view, but for 2K, providing the RAC check it out, and confirm it is ok, then I would take it. You wont get a good Sportline for under 3 grand
