Well, if you were thinking of replacing your tappets anyway, you don't have much to loose. When are we gonna do that anyway??

For the sake of an extra £18 (if you're 8v), you could just buy a full set of new tappets, save the cost of faffing about (I should know!).

Try rebuilding your current ones first, its free and doesn't take long.

I don't much believe in oil additives, but a mechy mate of mine swore by Lucas Oil Stabilizer when his motor was tapping and burning a little oil.

For the record I did an ATF flush and although it didn't much help my current tappets, it thoroughly cleaned the inside of the engine, my oil is still golden now ;)

I tried it on my Polo years ago and it made no difference to be honest.

if he can make it

as for the treatment, When i had the mk2 i had noisy tappets when cold, used wynnes engine flush, run the car on high idle for 15 mins and drained the oil as specified, new oil and new filter, started it up, and tappets tapped for 2 seconds and i didnt hear them again for afew months.
So as a temporary cure, do it, but if you want a permanent fix, as ben said, spend an extra £18 and get new tappets.
