When my 16v had the same symptoms it was leads. If you looked carefully along the lead you could see a grey mark where it had been arcing.

Ive got leads coming tonight along with a new fuel filter which ill fit over the weekend.

Changed the fuel filter last night after the nightmare of snapping a fuel line banjo thing!!
But the car is running better so it's leading me to believe that I'm on the right track.
Time to change the under body pump.

FIXED!!!!
Fuel filter and pump has it running good!
I didn't think it was going to be the pump as it was intermittent. Loving it now I've got my GTI back!
