edition 30 all the way, i use to have a r32 mk5 and the edition 30 is much better. the only gripe are the brakes which are hopless.
if you buy a gti 200 ps you will always wish you had got a ed30.

TBH with you guys, Im a bit of an eye candy whore!!!
Ive been known to buy things for looks more then anything else!
To me, the ED30 looked nicer, with its colour coding etc, and I liked the interior part leather etc as well. Initially I loved the Monza's and thought of selling the Pescaras and buying the 18" Monza's instead - but when I saw the Pescara's in teh flesh I realised how good they look ;)
The fact that it came with extra ponies and a K04 engine was a bonus for me, and I dont feel the need for a remap at any point soon since its plenty of power for me............well for now anyways ;)

You dont buy a car every day! If you can stretch to the ED30 go for it - you can pick up some bargains at around £16k now. However, make sure you dont skint yourself so much that you can afford to run the thing! If so, the GTI with a remap is just as fast, if not faster, then a stock ED30 anyways.
Go by what your budget can stretch to - comfortably!

Thing is, unless you are moving from an ED30 to a GTI you are not going to be dissapointed.  The standard GTI is still an awesome machine.  If the extra 30 bhp is important you can remap.  There is an argument that as the GTI has a smaller turbo, it spins up faster and is slightly quicker of the mark.  Once its big brother gets its breath together, the ED30 is of course faster but it does make the GTI a little easier to drive around town.

If you have the money for an ED30 deff go for it.  I don't know how you're paying for it but if like me then yes its a big one off purchase but the money comes out once a month!  I'll buck the trend and say its not worth stretching yourself for a car.  If the ed30 will be a big stretch, go for the GTI, it wont be a dissapointment.  And if you do get dissapointed, there are options for when that happens.
