The pirelli HAS history more than the above poster said.
The pirelli edition was a limited edition run out model of the mk1 GTI in europe in late 1983 early 1984. Its very collectable. The UK got a similar model of a run of 1000 called the Campaign. (I own one and have the official letter, sales receipt etc (its even in the small ava pic on the left)). There are slight differences between the Campaign and the Pirelli mk1's.
But at the time importing from Germany was very common due to the exchange rate and so alot of factory speced ordered Pirellis were built to UK Campaign specs so theres a few shall we say 'discussions' in the mk1 world about what is a genuine campaign model and whats a pirelli import.

Basically (more or less) the Pirellis were the same as the campaign's but in 'euro standard spec' got colour coded bumpers and wheel arches.
The poster above, The first early mk2 GTI's got a similar Pirelli alloy but they are not the same as the mk1's alloys the letter P's are smaller as the gap between the P's is bigger due to the extra weight of the mk2.
Heres a couple of photos.
First pic is a UK MK1 GTI Campaign.
Second pic is of a MK5 GTI Pirelli with a mk1 GTI Pirelli
