I just broke my car! - Manifold and white smoke
« on: 13 April 2009, 21:53 »
Mk2 16v 1990

Noticed quite a lot of white smoke lately on idle / revs, no obvious coolant loss or mayo. When the engine is switched off, white smoke will continue for a minute or so from the exhaust.

I had a look below the air box and noticed a pipe seemed loose. it is white / cream and made of fabric and seems to be connected to the bottom of the airbox and then goes to the back of the engine, wiggled it a bit and found this.

I am guessing it is the part of the manifold, it all looks rather rusty down there, any tips? and could it be related to the white smoke for the exhaust, or do I in fact have two unrelated problems!

Wondering if it is safe to drive?

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks Stuart

This happened to mine as well, all it is, is the warm air hose to aid start up in cold weather.
I have taken mine out and have had no issues with it, helps that our GTI's are injection rather than carbs.

Thanks, so do I remove the rusted piece and leave the pipe hanging below the engine, or remove it from the airbox altogether? Would it be better to just repair it?

i took the metal shroud piece out and have left the hose as it was, i think all the metal piece did was help position the hose towards the exhaust manifold to help draw in warm air. The pipe loose stills seems to do the job fine so i'd leave it like that.

the warm air  ducts fall off  all the time  no issue on gti really,  the white smoke is sub optimal   dose it smell of oil and what is your oil consumption like ?
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

It doesn't smell of oil, and the consumption seems minimal. Does smell like the car is running rich though, any connection?
