High-lift Cams?
« on: 26 July 2004, 16:53 »
Long-time-no-see everybody.... back in the land of the living and surprise-surprise, looking to tinker with the old "go-kart".

Just wanting to know what people's experiences have been with changes in performance with new camshafts, in particular on 2.0 8v engines. I've already got PiperX induction, remap and Milltek cat-back exhaust, so should benefit a fair bit from the cam change.

The one I've been looking at is the Schrick camshaft as offered by AMD (?180) - still trying to find out how much it'll be including fitting, VAT, etc...

Just wanting to find out which camshafts screw up low-end torque / fuel economy - I'm, not out for some massive change in performance... ideally just the same low-end torque and economy that I have right now, but with smoother revving and the capacity to rev a bit further.

Any links / info / words of wisdom would be appreciated...

What sort of questiosn should I be asking AMD / others about the Schrick Cam they're offerning?

AMD have a very good reputation.

Speak to them and ask the same questions as you asked here re torque, economy, revs etc..  I'm sure they will have fitted some before and know how they perform in the car.

A VR6 isn't a way of life, it's just a car.

fai - have you seen this fitted on an 8v? Was it RR'd before and after? If so how much low-end torque did it lose and what did it rev up to (revs at peak bhp? and revs for peak torque?).

thanks

any idea how much a cam change should cost?

AMD are quoting ?820 +VAT for a Schrick cam... but "This includes labour, gaskets cam, tappets and a new remap to take into account the mods."

What is the normal cost??

VR6 - That's what I thought!!

Even with their remap and pre/post rolling road treatment, it's still pretty steep!

How much should those cams go for normally? Have you installed any in 2.0 8v's, what sort of improvmeent should they normally give? How much would you charge to do the cam-change?

Is a remap essential / advisable?

My last remap was when the car was stock - is it sensible to then change the cam, exhaust AND induction without another remap?

Thanks!

The cam should be 200-300 quid, no more than that.
Maybe 100 quid for a set of tappets.
Labour would be approx 2 hours.
Another remap isn't essential.
Did AMD quote 180 quid just to supply a cam?
If so the labour charge sounds rather steep.

I would charge 50 quid to change a cam on an 8v engine, to be honest its not a major job.
Far more difficult to do on a 16v/vr6.

AMD quote was ?820+ VAT (as far as I can work out the breakdown) was:

?180+ VAT for cam.
?350+VAT for remap (inc before and after RR graphs).
?300+VAT for labour, gaskets, tappets.

So I guess that means they're charging around ?200 for the labour... do think they've done many 8v's before?
