Maybe a change of plan...
« on: 09 April 2009, 14:07 »
Just discovered that as of September may have a new job which could require a 80 mile round commute every day for about 6 months, seriously considering the GT 170 now, obviously would prefer a gti but cab't afford to throw $$$ down the drain! Any idea how much money i'd save with a derv?

All I can say is that if you are on a steady run, driving within legal limits, the GTi is surprisingly economical.

A couple of weeks ago, I drove Peterhead to Edinburgh (approx 150mls). Sitting at around 70 on the dual carrigeway and I got an average of 38mpg.

Superb for a 200bhp turbo charged car I think!

My previous BMW 120D M Sport only did 41mpg on exact same journey.

Regards

Andy

I really dont think the GT 170 will really make enough of a saving TBH. Stick with the GTI, or you'll regret it later on!!

As stated above, the GTI is pretty economical. I get around 30-35mpg whenever I drive sensibly, and have hit just under 38mpg before as well!

Really, 80 miles a day, 400 miles a week, im pretty sure in 6 months there'll be some pretty huge savings! Need some realisitic mpg figures from a derv owner really!

I do 300 miles a week in mine. With 400 miles a week you're probably looking at around £60-70 a week on fuel.......

The guy getting 30+ on a steady run from a GTI and only 41 from a derv...I think not.

My dad has a 140hp Passat and he sees really good figures, taking it real easy and staying within the speed limits, getting around 600-700 miles per tank.

Get that from a GTI and I will lick your ring peice.

Remember DERV is 10p more a litre than standard 95RON, and 5p more than 98-99RON

Unless the diesel car was getting into the high 40s to 50s in MPG, I doubt you'll see big enough returns. But tax will be cheaper. Do the maths, all of it, work it out to a monthly figure, including the cost of buying the car in the first place

do you not get mileage reinbursement from your work if its business miles? what does your contract say about working from a different location?

speak to Rhyso in the mk4 section on savings etc on derv, i will say that the gt 170 is about 50 - 55mpg iirc, but its noisy and the interior is not much to look at in comparrison.

this is exactly what i used my gti for when travelling around all of wales, i was glad i didnt go for a diesel tbh,  and notched up 35,000 miles doing it for the last year.
