Considering a GT TDI (140) - help appreciated!
« on: 09 April 2009, 12:05 »
Hi guys, first post, so bear with me!

Currently own an RX-8 - brilliant drive, but the economy is killing me now I'm doing more mileage. So I've been looking at 140 and 170 GT TDIs. The 170s are very hard to find with leather and quite expensive, so I'm looking at 140s and would get a Bluefin upgrade on them to make it very similar to 170.

Now, I'm a bit new to all this, but are there any downsides to doing this, e.g. weakened engine components?

Also, I'm used to a 0-60 of just over 6 seconds. I realise I'm going to take a hit on the power. But the 140 is listed as 9.3, whereas the 170 is 8.3, I think. Will the upgraded 140 definitely achieve a time of around 8 seconds?

Also, is installing the Bluefin something I (as a bit of an idiot when it comes to cars - I get my cousin and brother to help!) can easily do? It seems like it from their site.

Other than that, what else can I expect from going to to a GT TDI (probably 06 plate) from my RX-8? I used to drive a 1.4 Fiesta diesel, so at least it won't be as bad as that!

Anything I should be aware of before I buy? I've been reading around on here and noticed a bit about cam belts and water pumps.

Cheers,

my gt sport 140 came with free factory fit leather a standard, so get that checked out.

yes, if you looking at 2nd hand, id deffo check service history, and yes, if its an 05, 55 plate check and see if cambelt has been done or when its due (which would be 4 years from reg date)

I have Bluefin on my Edition 30 .... it is very, very easy to do !  I am a complete fool with IT and electrical stuff but managed it easily. And the results were rather good too

IMO the 140 TDi is a super car - I know 2 people who have them and are really happy .... I think it is better value than the 170 and easier to map too !

I've done a lot of research in to these and have driven a few 170's, what you miss in 0-60 you get in 40-100 trust me, loads of torque!

Test drove both the 140 GT and 170 GT before buying a GTi. Both had loads of Torque and felt fairly rapid but for me the 170 edged it as it felt a little more 'powerfull' through the gears?. I would recommend a test drive of both, back to back like i did so you can compare the two. In the end i drove the GTi and was hooked on that straight away.

I used to have a GT TDI 140 before the GTI and I can say that it is a very good performer.  Performance is much better than the official figures.  0-60 is nearer to 8 seconds!  I'm sure a remapped one will be well rapid.

The reason why I got a GTI was that I always wanted one and it was more of a special car than the TDI.

I've had two TDI 140's, both remapped by Superchips and both DSG. One was an A3 and the other the MKV.

If you choose the DSG (don't know about manual!) you'll be looking at 0-60 times in around 7.5 seconds. The MKV managed a 0-60 in 7.33 seconds at inters

It will be the torque in the mid-range and the economy you will love. The RX8 is well known to have a penchant for both fuel and oil and the difference will be vast.

Had an MkV 140TDI myself, and had massive problems with the torque limiter, tried 3 remaps ( about 200bhp ), the torque limiter kicked in on all of them. But the engine itself is a beauty, loved the punch on low revs.

My old man after driving my GTI decided that he liked the Golf so much he bought his first ever Golf - He has gone for the Mark 6 GT 140 TDI.

Seeing him for the first time since he picked it up for a quick spin so i will report back on what i think of it if you like?
