hello just bought a mk3 p reg 8v gti got a few niggles as was cheap !!! but its black !!!gear box seems bit stiff to engage gears most prob norm but know clutch is on way out,but getting bit much noise in reverse fine when lift clutch and go back but when drop clutch it grinds a bit going to get clutch done is gearbox ok !!!also getting raspy sort of noise from engine at 3k sounds bit like heat shield manifold rattle any ideas how to put right are these comm0ons probs and solutions would be great only done 80k cheers black

First i would check the box alingment and replace any bushes it needs for the selectors, then give it some new box oil (sythetic is best) have a look in the mk2 maintence section for a how to on gear linkages. And you may find the adjuster on the cable has gone and if your going for a clutch get this done while your at it

and exhaust heat shield rattles are common and it either remove or try your best to re fit it!

cheers can anyone point me to a post on how to change gearbox oil and what oil to use and how much i would need cheers peter
