well ive just been to the police and they are going to let me know if there ok to use on the road or not. if there not i will be selling the whole lot (wheels + tyres, and adapters if needed) for 1k which i think is a seriously good price

That is a good price mate but if they are illigal i won't be wanting them either cos mines a mk4 also and can't be feckked havin the arches pulled 
Just get the thinner adaptors ?

In a nutshell :

no specific law, several different regulations you can use for or against. Grey area, and will depend on copper's mood and interpretation if they deem it to be unacceptable. if they do... you risk 3points and a £200 cash fine.

The only grey area of legislation around states that maximum protrusion of any part from a covered arch is 30mm of poke.

police got back to me and said that aslong as the tread of the tyre is under the arch its ok if the side wall is sticking out, so they said im all good  gonna ring them back 2mz and ask if i can get it on paper so i can keep it in the glove box just to be safe

Can't believe you went to the police! fair play but I'd be happy with the set up you have there it looks great! The tread is inside the arch so put them back on and show those bad boys off!
