« on: 03 April 2009, 22:38 »
Hi all, another newbie question for ya lol, is there actually any difference between the GTI (big bumper) door side trims and a regular standard golf trims? apart from the GTI red badge of course :D its just the side trims are hard to get now and i was wondering if you can just put the standard ones on and grab some GTI badges for them?? cheers Paul

The GTI badge is recessed into the side panel trim, i.e. the trim tapers at the hinge end to accomodate this.  Not sure if small bumper golf trims were like this, I haven't had one myself.

Ebay do have a lot of breaking MK2's so maybe someone will oblige and release the trims to you.  Hope this helps.
Who would have thought that reverting back to standard would be this expensive!!!!

Sorry, should have eyed the pics.  Pretty sure there are plenty breakers going on ebay, just don't buy now, unless you want a wheel nut!

Hi Paul,

Looking at your set up in the pics, it looks like the previous owner was keen on the small bumber look, your best bet would be to aquire a full set of early door run strips, they are slighty wider/thicker then the post 90 items, if you can get a set of the early arches it will finish it all off bices as they meet nicely from the front wing and also the rear quarter, if your looking to convert back to the post 90 big bumper look then again you need the bumpers/side door mouldings/sill covers/arch trims, but like you say the side door mouldings are very hard to source now.

Hope this helps..

PS. the early side door mouldings did not have a recess for the red gti badge or a badge.

Tesh

Side trims on non gti models with skinny bumpers are slightly broader, I have a smoothed set for a 5door in the shed inc arch trims but think yours is a three door?

Alternatively if you track down some (super rare) rear spats off an early CL then you don't need door mouldings.

If you're car is lowered you will find that it ends up being lower than other peoples doors so when feckless wonders open it into yours it misses the bump strip thus negating the purpose in having them and leaving a scrape in your nice paint  .
To surmise then, break out the MIG and weld over those holes and be done with it. Top tip is to hold a 2p behinde the hole as it doesn't stick, keeps the weld neat and stops it going all blobby.

You don't own a Mk2, you support it.
