  • Re-standardising the 8V
Hello all, My name is Chris and I have recently purchased my first VW, a 1990 MK2 GTI 8V.

The aim is to restore it back to it's original condition as far as possible and already i've run into a problem!

Before I ask the question, I have treid searching through the posts but clearly no-one is quite as daft as me here!!!!!!

I have purchased a set of BBS RM's (15") and started to fit them, the front went well but as soon as I tried to fit one to the back I realised that the wheel didn't fit over the wheel hub properly!  ahhhhh!

Are the front wheel hubs a different size to the rear?  The previous owner did say that he had fitted mk3 claipers at the back but he didn't mention anything else.  Or are the wheels ever so slightly different?

All really stupid questions, just need someone with the know-how to dig me out of the preverbial!   :embarassed:
Who would have thought that reverting back to standard would be this expensive!!!!

the hubs should be the same, calipers wouldn't make a difference as they bolt up to the same carriers.

are you saying it wont go over the spigot?

Possibly a spigot ring stuck in the wheel?

MK3 calipers on the rear are a common mod.

Yeah, as I go to locate the wheel, it appears that the hub locator is slightly too big for the centre of the alloy, it couldn't be the arrangement of the wheels could it? (2 desgined for front and 2 designed for back).

They came off a mk2 so I would expect them to fly on.  The offgoing wheels are ridiculous aftermarket 17" TSW venoms, would they have modified the rear hubs to suit them?

Will double-check the spigot ring theory but i'm pretty sure that they are clear.  I really appreciate the help guys, my wife is going to cut my mummy/daddy button off if I don't get this investment to work!!!!!!!!

This seems a little odd as they should fit, but its worth knowing that you can have the center bores machined out for a small amount of cash.

Has the spiggot ring from the TSW's stuck to the hub, try and post a pic if you can.

They are 100% the same front and back it is all I can think of.

I had this problem with some Borbet A's I fitted recently. Was the same on my mates mk3. I ran down the hill with a round file through the middle. ... no honestly!
