VW help required......
« on: 23 July 2004, 09:18 »
I've got an old (1993) Golf (it's a 1.4 CL if that matters.....) and while it's generally OK, it needs a bit of work:
* a new boot lid (my own fault I reversed into a bollard  :-[)
* new trim on paasenger side door - some idiot pulled it off
* a new fan - there's some sort of problem with the fan (I have trouble in traffic jams!) - I've changed the fuse several times, but it keeps blowing, so I presume the whole fan needs replacing.....

I'm going to go to a breakers yard to see if I can pick up a new boot lid & trim - but as a girl, I don't wnat to be taken for a ride. What is a fair price (I'm in Newcastle if that makes a difference) - hopefully I'll get them to fit the boot as well.

What about getting a new fan - any tips?

Many thanks
Piggy

Firstly - Welcome!  ;)

Bootlid....not sure about the price - might be worth investing in a copy of vw motoring and ringing round the breakers listed or ringing round ones in yellow pages. (or check out www.yell.com). Wouldnt have thought that a breakers would fit it for you tho  :-\

Maybe someone on here can recommend a good place in your area to get it done.

Fan....I had this with my polo gti, whole fan was replaced (fortunately under warranty) and its now cured. Prob will need a new fan to sort it??

Please steer clear of bollards in future.....  :P ;D

Gonna sound really sexist here, but if ya can take a bloke with ya to the breakers. Dad, bro, mate etc. not sayin u aint capable just most of those guys talk down to ladies, seen it so many times.
If ya cant then ring around first and get prices.

If the fan is blowing fuses it may not be the fan but faulty wiring. If u can get a length of wire and clip it direct to battery the to terminal on fan to check out.

Sure more and better advise will be forthcoming.

And welcome.  :)

Ebay is the Golfs best friend, you will find so many spares on there that chances are, you will get exactly what you are looking for.
I don't own this anymore - I just can't be arsed to change the picture

Well my plan was to wear a skirt and be very nice to them  ;)

It might work yet...... I got a back bumper off them and they fitted for me too and were ever so nice (that siad they may well have fleeced me!).

The thing is I'm not overly good at knowing one end of a car from another (I'm not completely crap mind - but compared to you experts I don't know much!) - hence I'm not sure I can "tinker" with my fan to establish whether it's the fan or th wiring........

Thanks to everyone for your help though. This is my first car - and I'm hoping there's life in the old dog yet.........

If you're not in a hurry for a tailgate then ring around as many scrappies as you can asking for one in the same colour, save yourself a few quid on spraying charges  :)

That's what I plan to do - the one I've got is fine - just dented. I cringe every time I see it.......

It's tornado red, so I'm just going to have to wait for one to come in...........

Theres a red MK3 golf in the scrappy near me (In Wokingham) which is off the M4, junction 10 I think.  Well it was there when I last looked but it might have gone by now...
