Hot '86 mk2 :(
« on: 23 July 2004, 08:53 »
My 1.8 8v mk2 is not used very regularly, and recently its had 4 valves replaced due to a snapped timing belt.

Anyway, I took it out for a run last night, I was out for about half hour.

Towards the end, the MFS thingy showed an oil temperature of 102 degrees, and it was fookin hot when I got out - the fan was running for a bit after I switched it off. Also, the water temp light was flashing, tho it has got water in  :-\

Is the oil temperature thing normal like???

Bit worried, I wanna go to next months No Rice in it.....

The oil temp sounds ok (but don't quote me as I dont have a GTI)  The water light can flash if the sender on top of the tank is playing up, take it out and clean the connections.  It can also go off if the antifreeze mixture is too weak, should be about 50/50 ish.  Do your heaters work OK?

When you have the cap off can you see a steady stream of water coming from the return hose, and when the fan kicks in, is the bottom rad hose hot?

The water temp led is a tempremental thing on a lot of mk2's. Mine went through a phase of flashing at random now hasn't done it for ages. As long as your water is topped up then unscrew the sensor from the top of the expansion bottle and clean up the two metal prongs with some wire wool.
As for your oil temp mine has got as high as 108 degrees on my journey home (which takes about half an hour) in this recent warm weather. As long as your oil is well topped up 102 is quite acceptable.

Forgot to add my car is also an 8V for oil temp comparison.
My last 16v got as high as 130 degrees if you beat it with a stick for a few miles.

The oil temp can really change depending on the type and age of oil in your motor.

Around 100 after a bit of fun is fine - 80 to 90 during normal use is about the average. If she starts warming up though, don't start to panic, change the oil first before crying thinking something is about to break.

It's usually a sight of poor quality old oil ....

Its normal for oil temp to be well over 100 if ya thrashing it, especially in the current hot weather.

I think I saw mine hit 116 once when I was running the 8v. Constant cruising on the motorway doing 110+ did that ;D

My last 16V hit 120 one time, but it was usually around 100-110

My 8V's around 80-90.. seen it at 100 once.. but I drove a bit accordingly :)
