Bike Carbs

Has anyone put their 1.8 8v gti lump on bike carbs??

I know you have to make your own manifold for it but what i would like to know is which bike carbs do you use?

It's a dumb-f*ck idea as you're putting the carbs above the exhaust manifold, so you're very likely to run into lots of running problems as the fuel in them is likely to heat up, so you'll get vapour-lock etc etc.

If you want to keep it 8V, stick an ABA or similar head on there, so the carbs are round the front. 

If you find 'some bike carbs' off something like a 1000cc bike and then get the inlet made by Bogg Bros then they'll jet them to suit, allegedly.

Personally I'd go with bike throttlebodies, run on proper management, so the motor (with the crossflow head) will behave itself.  All your 8V stuff (cam, exhaust manifold etc) will bolt right up to the crossflow, but you'll need the waterhousing on the end of the head and the pipework to take the water to the radiator - there's not a water outlet on the front of the head, only the one on the end of it.

that did 172 on a dyno (not bogg bros) with a STANDARD 2.0 engine just a 4 branch and R1 carbs on it !!!!

Thay are an awsome set up and i would do it again (just not with the exhaust under them !!!

It's allegedly for me cos I've not had any experience with them. 

Throttlebodies are the way forward - carbs are just a good way of hosing fuel quicker....

i could get about 150 miles out of 47Ltrs of 98Ron fuel if i was gentle

but that was boring !!!! so i used to get about 100 miles per tank LOL

What head is the ABA or something you said about another head coz i can agree with you on that one as on a 8v the carbs are hidden away out of reach of air where as at the front like a 16v the ram air from the front would be amazing ,

What car in the head you are talking about from ?

ABA  head is the head from the mk4 gti i think.

I'm toying with the idea of bike TB's on my 2.0 16v at some point in the future.

if the ABA is from a mk4 are you telling me that can be put onto a 1800 8v mk2 bottom end then run bike carbs off the head as the inlet is away from the exhaust

Yes, the crossflow head WILL go "straight" on a 1.8 motor, provided you reposition the oil return on the head.

Dave at www.Futbus.com can make stub manifolds to accept throttlebodies and carbs.  Nick, he's already got an ABF head as a template and is working something cute up for DannyP.

Try and get yours off a car, with all the stuff you'll need still attached, or like me, you'll wind up spending a fortune at VW, picking up bits.

After cleaning, porting and re-positioning of the oil return:



End of the head - these two are the only water outlets on the head - there is nothing on the front

This motor can be found in most 1.6 or 2.0 petrol motors from the last 10 years - Golf, Bora, Passat, also Octavias and various Seats.
