Nothing wrong with going for something aftermarket. As long as the alloys look in keeping with the car and you don't end up getting some horrible chrome/bling wheels then you should be okay. VW alloys, Audi style alloys, BBS, Schmidt etc all have good history with being used on Golfs and so be a little more adventurous
