Have you tried hitting the top of the dash directly above the rev counter.

I find a good smack with an open hand usually gets my rev counter / dash lights working again!

check the red/black wire attached to the coil :)
failing that, pull the fuse for the clocks for 30 seconds

Dont worry about it. It'll just be having a little rest. It'll work fine again when it wakes up.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Mine all stopped working again yesterday - the slap technique didn't work, but disconnecting/reconnecting the battery worked

My rev counter didn't work when I got the car, I changed the clocks which was a bit of a pain but the MFA wasn't working either so it was worth it, however......

....when I got it all back together, the indicators didn't work and instead the stalks operated the horn! Imagine my surprise!!!!

Seemingly, it's really easy to slot the flat pins into other sockets so be aware of that.  Bear in mind as well that if you do have to change the clocks it is a dash out job and it's really easy to break stuff as I found out at a cost!
Who would have thought that reverting back to standard would be this expensive!!!!
