how would i know a mis-fire when i had one?

Ok, So a lot of threads on mis fires but none saying what they are.

took the car out today first time in months after my slight issues in january.

anyway, enjoyed a good blast through the peak district and it ran fine. I then noticed the car was beginning to struggle. It was hesitating after i planted my foot, mostly between 2-3,000 revs, and then would jerk and pick up. Similar feeling to wheel spinning i suppose, but it was doing it in all gears.

the weather took a turn for the worse as this was happening and i know damp can cause this?

is this misfiring? and if so, is it just plugs and dizzy cap?

got pretty annoying/scary when overtaking.

I should say, i had the alternator off the other day, and am running without a top timing cover. could these make any difference at all if it wasnt on right? i would think no but may as well give all the information i can.

Cheers
