Rear brake pipes

Hello!

I'm in the middle of putting braided hoses on my 8v Gti, but I seem to have hit a brick wall on the two hoses that go over the rear beam.  The unions the brake pipes are seized and one is so corroded half the head of the bolt is missing. Even though the rear of the car is jacked right up on axel stands, I'm finding that getting access to undo the unions is a nightmare.  There's brakets and the brake bias valve stopping me from getting near with my spanners.  Don't think there's any chance of keeping the old pipes but how do you get the buggers off?

I'd like to do it myself if possible, its been a bit of a winter project, but summers approaching and I'd like to drive it again, am I best off getting my local garage to pick up the pieces?

Just done this mate , but i took axle off so made it much easier  :cool:

cut the brake pipes then hammer a socket over the unions

Grazy,
Taking the rear beam makes sense, more room to work.  Thats not going to be an easy job is it? 

Nealey,
Did you manage to do it this way? when I was looking the unions seemed to close to the chassis, so couldn't get a hammer or socket anywhere near.  Though i could be looking at it all wrong...

ive never done it on them ones before so dont know how much room there is but i have done it on the lines going into the compensator and it worked

Dude i am no mechanic , but got car on axle stands and it all comes off sweet as , took care of a few other issues while i was under there ,

Made some progress on it today. Managed to get three off, one more to go.  Decided to attack the bendy metal clips with some snips, a blow torch to soften them (not risking it near any fuel lines), a drill and a lot of swearing.  Once the clips broke off, I cut the brake pipe and everything dropped out.  :smiley:  Reckon, with a small cutting wheel the job would have been even easier. 

Maybe I won't need to drop that axle  :smiley:

If your brake pipes are that tired you should probably be fitting new hard lines with the flexis you're fitting.
