Hard Acceleration/Floor Mounted Accelerator
« on: 26 March 2009, 09:46 »
Morning guys

Just a quick question out of interest really. I've noticed that if I accelerate using the tip of my toe on the top of the accelerator the car really seems to fly.

Mine is a manual so it has nothing to do with the DSG kicking down or anything. And it is standard, no remap yet.

Realise it may just be the laws of physics in that I'm applying more pressure higher up the pedal therefore accelerating harder although not pressing particularly hard. But anyway, if anyone else has experiecned this or has an actual explanation I'd be interested to hear.

Are you sure because you're pushing the accelerator with your toe, your heel isnt on the floor so your leg is suspended. And the force of acceleration will feel a lot more than if your heel of the foot is planted to the floor?! Lol. Sounds silly but i think its this.  :undecided:

Ha ha! Could well be that

I've done it in my mate's r32 as well and it does that same, plus we've both been passengers with our feet planted on the floor and it felt quicker then as well.

I don't actually think it's to do with anything technical, just the increased force with which I'm accelerating despite only applying gentle pressure to the top of the accelerator.

I know what you mean, and have thought this myself but I think its mostly psychological...but

When you press the top of the accelerator a smaller force is needed to move it a distance than if you were to press it near the hinge.  I'm not sure if the sensor detects the amount of torque applied to the pedal (how hard you plant your foot down) and if it responds with a quicker "opening of the throttle"* depending on this torque?

If it does then pressing the top of the throttle would apply more torque and thus would result in a quicker throttle response from part open to wide open?

* I know we don't have a throttle anymore but you know what I mean.

That seems a pretty good summary/explanation. I think it most probably is to do with the whole force/distance thing.

Either way, it's good fun doing it.
