Noisy rattling at certain rpm
« on: 25 March 2009, 22:42 »
There's a severe tinny rattling noise that seems to come on from about 3200rpm to 3350 rpm. Its definately not coming from the bonnet.

Trying to consider all the things it can be without putting it on slits.

The obvious (to me anyway ) would be the exhaust pipe. But could it be something else like the heat shield?

If your heat shield is still on there I would say its almost certain! They are bastards to get off mind. Ben

There is a bolt that runs between the two downpipes above where they merge and the heat shield.  These can get loose and rattle.
Prepare to loose your knuckles!!  A quick fix(but won't last for ever) is to put some fire gum either end of the bolt.  Think I got away with about 1000 rattle free miles by doing this.

Cheers

If it is the heat shield, keep your patience - stupid piece of crap!. Its pretty awkward to get to because it sits just above the subframe. I managed to loosen mine up a little more by using a 4' stake and whacking it from above. Then I got under and cut a section off it.

It was a right arse though because my grinder *only just* fit in the gap to cut it and I was literally half an inch from chopping the PAS lines to bits.

Loving the collective amount of venom people have for these things.
Ben: Did you bother putting a new one back on afterwards?

I didn't bother replacing it - not really worth the effort in my eyes.

I guess in the real world it *might* stop my PAS fluid from heating up but only to a marginal degree. Most garages that come across rotten heat shields just bin them off and don't bother replacing them.
