From 944 turbo to mk3 GTI 8v
« on: 24 March 2009, 23:07 »

Hi all,

For the last 8 years I've owned 3 Porsche's and on Saturday sold my third. A lovely metallic black 250 944 turbo with all the options. The reasons were simple, my company is in administration, redundancy looms and I have a new born to keep clothed and fed.

Anyway, losing the 944 felt like a big weight off as the funds were going to help pay the mortgage. However, it did leave a hole in my garage which simply had to be filled and on the same day as selling the Porsche I bought this:

from here: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/921830.htm

It was obvious I would never match the out and out pace of the 944 that a turbo gives you with the Golf but I simply didn't use the car enough to justify keeping/maintaining it and having cash tied up in it.

I got the Golf on a bit of a whim, although I always liked them and they are German which I like as well:). It is pretty tatty and needed a damn good clean but mechanically seemed well looked after with manuals, stamps and the right bits of history. For the money I paid though I'm well happy. The previous previous owner installed a lovely exhaust that gives a really good burble and the suspension set-up is sublime and has changed my view of FWD cars. Some more browsing and searching on here and I'm fast learning about these cars. This weekend will see me give it a service with a full oil flush and sump clean, air/oil filter and plugs. I also need to check the ABS sensors as the light doesn't go out (it didn't come on at all to start with but a quick trip to my scrappy today got me a new ABS/air bag unit).

Overall though, despite what some people might term a 'regression' I'm absolutely delighted and thrilled with this car. I can see myself doing lot's more tinkering on it for buttons and enjoying every minute of it. I'm really proud and chuffed to say I own a Golf GTI - still smiling massively and smugly (mainly safe in the knowledge that I know have 5k in the bank and a car that won't cost me 1k every time it gets serviced!).

Keep GTI'ing all!

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear about the redundancy and that. I'm going through the same, yet again, so know how it feels.

Car looks in good shape. Not a bad runaround really.

Thank you for the warm welcome, pics of my turbo can be found here:

Didn't need to use them in the end and never even advertised it for sale. Just happened to mention on a forum that I was 'thinking' of selling and then bam it was gone! For more than I paid for it too which was a first! Mind you, I'd had a couple of big bills to discount any real profit!

I had an S2 for 4 years prior to the turbo which I loved and cherished dearly even if it did nearly bankrupt me. Then I err'd with a Boxster and finally plumped for the turbo which was my dream 944 with full sports black leather and 10 speaker pack etc. Had lots of fun in them over the years but even the newest the 944 is coming up to 18 years of age and I'm sure like the mk1 and mk2 Golfs they need lot's of love and as with all things Porsche it doesn't come cheap. C'est la vie.

Always liked the buzz at shared Porsche events when the VW guys join in and can remember a rather full on evening fire and singalong guitar session with the Camper crews at the campsite during one PCGB national event.

Also got down to the Porsche picnic in Reading this summer and the VW contingent were in full force there too with some lovely cars on display.

I hope to get to a few meets during my VW ownership which I'm envisaging will be a long time to come yet!

Thanks again for the welcome!:)
