Dash rattles - do dealers fix under warranty?
« on: 23 March 2009, 22:00 »
My lovely new GTI has an annoying creak / rattle on the air vent on the center top of the dash. Will my local dealer fix this for me free of charge under warranty? Or am I better trying to fix it myself...

Hi There

Assuming yours is within the 3 year manufacturers warranty yes they will. I had the same type of rattle caused by the plastic moving agains itself on the internal structure below the vent - the dealer took 3 attempts to cure it - the car now has more felt padding than Robin Hood and his merry men but doesnt rattle.

Its quite common i remeber a link expalining the problem on vwvortex but cant find it.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Yanek

Short answer - yes, this is a known area for rattles but quality of repair/fix may vary from dealer to dealer.

Mine had TWO very annoying rattles when I purchased it, -ONE being the steering wheel housing(went in twice to the dealers for it as it sounded like a window was going to fall out  :undecided:)
Second was the rattle your talking about, but this is going to get sorted when I move the Parrot bluetooth.
Although it has quietened down over the past few months!

....

I've found that various little rattles and squeaks have come and gone during the last 3.5 years / 63k miles. Once you are focussed on driving, you don't hear them. It's a mass-produced hatchback, not a handbuilt Rolls-Royce!

.........but remember Golf's were always sold on build quality.Remember the mk2 advert were the bloke pulls into a garage because of a squeak ?.The old guy at the garage scratches his head & then rocks the car & realises it's the drivers girlfriends ear ring.Puts a drop of oil & no squeak. :smug:.If only everything in life was as reliable as a vw.

Yes, that was a classic advert :afro:

Thing is though, times have changed since then and adverts rarely reflect the truth. I guess I don't think of the Golf range as luxury so I'm personally not bothered.

Engine mounts for me soon - That'll help increase sounds in the cabin :afro:

I always hear people complaining of rattles with the centre console vent. I have the tray instead and have never had any rattles. In fact, I've never had any rattles at all! The one upside to owning a 1.4?
Not low enough mk5
Not on the road enough mk3
