Advantages of a remapped Derv over a 1.8T?

My brother may be looking at a new car, and I showed him a few MK4s.

He quite likes them, and likes the sound of a 1.8T, although he was thinking of another Diesel. I showed him Rhyso, and the BHP and torque it's putting out compared to the 118i (although it's 2L) Derv BMw 1 series he's driving about in now.

He quite liked it.

Also he does like the better MPG.

His would be the 5 door though.

Want's something cheaper then a MK5 for now and more modern then the MK3.

So, what's better?

There is no definitive which is better, between the 1.8T and the 130 and 150 diesels.  They both have their plus and minus points.  1.8T is more tunable I'd say, but the diesel has much better MPG, and pulls like a train.  Both will benefit hugely from a re-map.  The diesels cost more to buy initially too.
