Turning
« on: 19 July 2004, 14:05 »
I recently had a new steering rack fitted due to an accident i had. The problem is the full lock to either side is not anywhere as good as my old one. I can now no longer pull staright into a car parking space and can bearly get round a drivethrough at any macdonalds (what a nightmare). Rang the company I got it from and they said it aint a fault with the rack they are all made like this now. Any ideas what the problem is and if it can be adjusted or anything. Thanks

if all the new ones are too short go to a scrappy and get a second hand one!

Go to a decent VW dealer and get them to check it.
If its not right then go back to the garage that fitted it and demand they sort it.

do it your self! i did a steering rack on a driver the other week. was about ?50 exchange from europarts and took a couple of hours to change then took it to a garage to get it tracked for about ?25 so for ?75 and my dinner / drinks the car could steer again!

either you want a car which you can drive happily or a car with loads of mods that doesnt steer to your satisfaction? i know which i would rather have!

I for one would ever in a million years attempt the rack myself! sadly, I prefer to leave jobs like that for the experts, maybe one day when I have enough money to keep a second car I can start playing around with the mechanics, but I'd rather it was driveable away from the garage rather than me phoning up and going "errr... the car wont turn.... and theres a crunching noise when i try"  and knackering many other parts in the process.

And yes. thats what would happen to me. exactly.  ::)

*end of clueless mechanic advice*  ;D
