Poor Passat!
« on: 19 July 2004, 10:07 »
On saturday I was driving back home and went over some speed bumps. All inconsistantly raised I was merrily slowing down and minding my own business doing 15MPH and then slam! I hit the road and though that just the front bumper scraping, nothing to worry about. Anyway, got home and was going out to dinner (recommend this to anyone who lives in Surrey, The Hunters Lodge) we went and came back and I noticed oil everywhere. I knew what it was from  instantly. However, my g/f was saying it must have been something she hit. Guilt getting the better of me, I confest and now its in the VW Garage Woking being fixed. A massive crack in the engine sump was the result of poor standards from Ealing Councils road divisions. I agree with speed bumps, but not when they destroy your car. My golf scrapes over speed bumps at 5mph. There should be a standard that all councils work too.  >:(

Try complaining to the council.

My friend hit a big pot hole that he didn't see as it was filled with water.  It burst his tyre and buckled his wheel.  The council paid for a new wheel and fixed the pothole the next week.

Might be worth a try, although they will probably say you drove over the speed bump too fast.  Unless you can find a suitable pot hole to complain about.................

There is. You just need to find the legislation, the speed hump, the county court summons and a bit of time to make your point.

Def worth a try - but.......

Guessing here but if your car is non-standard - i.e. lowered then i'll bet they'll turn it down.

Go get some photo's of the humps - not suggestin u stand in the road - but it might help if u can prove diff heights.

The other variable of course is your speed....

I thought that if a speed hump was high enough to damage ur car, it was illegal?? something about obstructing a vehicle on a public highway??

my golf is lowered, and thankfully still makes it over most humps

Fortunatly its a company car so I can't be bothered to write a letter to the council. If was my Golf...................... now thats a different matter. I would demand that the person responsible should be facing the death penalty for trying to destroy a Dub! ;D

Sum of the speed bumps r just way too big n really i dont c the point in them, they may slow down normal motorists who wud b drivin slower anyway round housing estates/schools etc but not the bl00dy joyriders n thieves who cud cause the most damage anyhow!
Rant over! ;D
