Zaust trouble.
« on: 20 March 2009, 17:31 »
Right.  Tried replacing my centre box and found it wouldn't fit as the bore of the downpipe was waay too big.  I had ordered the exhaust that was, so say, related to my engine (pb) with no luck.

Now, to my knowledge pb engines weren't fitted to late model 8valves, but my car was registered in 93!!  However it was bought in Germany originally and I'm not sure how specs differentiate across borders.  (it is rhd btw).  All the original dealer books and stamps say it is a pb, 82kw etc

Could anyone on this forum shed any light on what downpipe I have fitted (it looks old and standard enough) cos a powerflow custom pipe is 300 squids.

HELP

Pb engine is the digifant 8v gti lump, so any 8v gti 87 onwards.

You could either have a 16v downpipe fitted (will have a silencer on the downpipe, 8v is just a pipe), or the wrong exhaust was sent out.

Have you measured the bore of each?

I do believe you do have to have the cat fitted (to pass MOT at least) on anything after J reg, '92

"The catalyst test is part of the MOT test for most class IV spark ignition petrol engined passenger cars with four or more wheels first used on and after 1 August 1992"

since yours is a MK2 they'll probably just test it as a non-cat car anyway, you may even have one as a 'retrofit' which was removed which could explain the size of the downpipe.  If you measure it and its 2.25" then you need a 16v one.  Its not an edition 1 is it?

Ta

I'd better get measurin'.  Will have to replace the whole lot if it is a valver exhaust, but cheaper than a custom.

......(5 mins later) Although having now done a  quiick search, a 16v system isn't much cheaper

Powerflow system fitted.  Three silencers +twin 3" exit.

Quite close to original in sound and appearance, so well chuffed.
