over heating led light on 91 16v er
« on: 19 July 2004, 06:33 »
Hi All,Some times the led overheating light flashes but the oil temp seems ok ,around 106 and the needle on the temp gauge is on about a quarter, i then just put heater onto hot a blow on full fan for 10 secs and it goes off, i can hear the car fan kicking in,so that seems to work.
Has any 1 else had this prob and or do they know a possible cause?
Thanks :-\

may sound simple but have you checked the coolant level? the light will flash if its low.

I had one like that. just flashed for no reason and then went off. I even changed the header tank and the problem was still there.

This problem is very common by all accounts, my 16v has a the same problem, the light flashes for no reason what so ever. I am beginning to suspect a problem with chaffed wires, similar to that concerning the rear wiper motors.

I had this on my 16v some years ago - the local vw dealer said the headgasket had gone. ?650 later the head gasket was changed - the led still flashed so you can imagine the kind of conversations I had with the dealership. In the end it turned out to be two things ;

1. like'Gambit' says you must ensure the coolent level is correct.

2. Check the lid on the resevoir is firmly twisted home and closed properly. The system is, as you probably know, pressurised and if the lid is not firmly and properly shut tight the sensor will detect the loss of pressure and set off the flashing led as a warning.

That was the simple (and inexpensive) cure to my flashing light problem in the end. regards, yt.

id actually replace the cap itself

i got one from GSF about 6mths ago and still found myself to be losing water, even though there is no sign watsover of any headgasket probs, then i listened to the expansion cap last night after i got home from work - and you could hear it his

so today i went to VAG and got a proper cap, only cost ?5.80, and you can see the difference in quality between the VAG item and GSF sh!te item!
