Need a new starter motor
« on: 20 March 2009, 11:18 »
My starter motor has been dodgy since I first bought the car. It sometimes makes an electrical noise when I turn the key instead of turning over. It's been getting worse lately so need to get a replacement really.

I've looked on GSF and a new Bosch starter motor is expensive. Are there any good places to get a starter motor or do I just pay it?

I've thought about getting a 2nd hand one but would rather buy new knowing it should last a long time.

You can get a recon one and get a surcharge on your busted one. thats the cheapest option other then buying second hand :)

Thanks Russ, that's certainly an option I need to consider. Any recommendations on where to get a recon one?

I've spent so much money on brand new genuine parts for this car but don't think I can afford to keep doing it with everything.

Rebuild it ;) Takes about 1hr.

Failing that, in Manchester there's a place called Manchester Auto Electrical which do refurbed starters, give them your old one and pay £40 for a refurbed one.

Hmmm, not as cheap as I was expecting and with added postage costs not sure it's worth it.

Will have to think on it. :undecided:

If you don't want to pay for a refurbed one - then rebuild it.

You can buy the replacement contacts for next to nothing, the bell housing bush for next to nothing and clean up the armature for nothing.

Your local auto electrical workshop will sort you out for £30 to £40. Look in yellow pages.
