Can't argue with £300.

Last time I was in the local stealers I'm sure it was up on the wall as being something criminal like £500

Yeah it is (I dont expect you to read the whole thread as its not that exciting lol). I have a £300 voucher from the dealers as thats where I bought the car from. My local dealer gave me a "discount" and quoted me £470 . . .

I think we are all being stiched up like kippers in respect of this change. The manual states 120,000 miles. I believe that this is a uk only policy change. WTF do Germany do? Can we find out? This is slot of money and you wonder if vw uk are just trying to bolster their main dealer profits.

I smell a rat.

Let the fun begin........Red Gti, full colour coding, DSG, Xenons, Winter pack, Lux pack, Highline, Sat Nav, Sunroof, Leather, Milltek, ABT rear valance, Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics....pescaras :-)

I think I would need it verified first re the uk change only. At least that's what they're saying on uk mkvis. If it is then it's a dramatic change and given the number if mk5s now moving into year four it's a sizeable income for them. Perhaps TT can throw in some technical information either in support of vw or against their argument. £411! Jesus H.

My mate has an 05 GTI - completely stock.
He runs on LL servicing and just took it into the dealers whenever the light came on and let them do whatever they needed to do. I think he's gonna change to T&D servicing since Ive educated him (thanks to T_T's thread!!) lol.
Made me look like I knew what I was talking about for a change!

Anyways, I just asked him if he's ever had a cambelt change. He says he hast. He's approaching 60,000 miles now. His dealer hasnt mentioned it - now is that a good or a bad thing??!!

It seems this may be dealer specific then? Some dealers change the cambelt at 40k or 4 years, while other dont??

I honestly think the ones pushing for a 4 year change are just chancing their arm and doing a bit of scaremongering to boot.  I haven't heard anything from my dealer and they are usually not shy at drumming up work.

I know for the mk4 1.8T the book said change at 120k miles, but INSPECT from 60k onwards.  I think this changed for some of the later models to a shorter interval.  TBH for my own peace of mind I wouldn't leave it later than 60k but I'm not convinced by this 4 year business, if I can be bothered I'll have a look in the book later - I suspect it will say something like inspect from 4 years onwards rather than you must replace at 4 years  :undecided:

Edit - Just gone out and got the book for an early 05 GTI AXX engine service book published 09.2004

@60k (then every 20k) engine cambelt is checked (petrol engines only)

@80k miles camshaft drive belt is replaced - 4cyl unit injector engines only

@120k miles camshaft drive belt is replaced (2.0L 110kW and 147 kW TFSI only)

@160 miles toothed belt tensioning roller is replaced

Every 2 Years

Brake fluid is changed

Dust and pollen insert is replaced (for vehicles driven less than 40k miles in 2 years)

Every 4 Years

The tyre filler bottle in the breakdown set is replaced if applicable

The sparkplugs are replaced for vehicles driven less than 40k miles in 4 years (not 147kW TFSI engine)

The sparplugs are replaced for vehicles driven less than 60k miles in 4 years (147kW TFSI engine only)

Every 6 Years

The air filter is changed for vehicles driving less than 60k miles in 6 years

The tyre pressure sensors (if fitted) are renewed  (thought the system on Golfs used the ABS sensors)

No mention of 4 years anywhere.

Does anyone know the contact details of VW UK? could ask them what the official line is, surely if its essential they would send us a new servicing schedule?

Had mine changed at 42,000 as recommended, the dealer also 'found' fault bearings that needed replacing at the same time. This is the same dealer that didn't top the oil up fully on my previous service, oil light came on as soon as I left the forecourt!

Anyone recommend a decent VW garage in the West Midlands??
