Cambelt Interval
« on: 18 March 2009, 11:37 »
Hi there, I have booked my car in to have the cambelt changed with a Main dealer as they advised that at 4 years it should be done, its a bit pricey at £470 but not as crazy as i was expecting, anyway when i looked in my manual last night it lists the change at 6 years/ 120,000 miles.

Have these numbers been revised in newere manuals? (Mine is 2005)?

I just want to check it needs doing,

Cheers,

R

Spoke about this the other week as I also got a letter stating that it needed changing. It was revised and is now every 4 years / 60,000 miles recommended.

Just to make you feel better I got a voucher from the dealer saying they will do it for £300 . . .  :lipsrsealed:

Christ! year 4 is a right doozy in terms of running the GTI eh?

I am at 34,000 miles. Car was serviced last March 25th and I thought that it was on LL....Car is now coming up and saying...SERVICE in 2500 miles or 15 days!

So,

1. DSG service = circa £250
2. Cambelt change = circa £470
3. Main Service = quoted £240!!

Bleedin heck its worse than a Porker! £960!!! There goes the revo and e30 rear and new milltek and smoothed sides, (getting rid of the ABT).

Slapperooni in the face that.

Let the fun begin........Red Gti, full colour coding, DSG, Xenons, Winter pack, Lux pack, Highline, Sat Nav, Sunroof, Leather, Milltek, ABT rear valance, Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics....pescaras :-)

The 40k service is a killer :(

Even worse if your running a DSG.

So its every 40k service that are the worst because of the cambelt and DSG (if you have DSG)?

Nah, 40k is just expensive because of the work that is involved on that service, not the cambelt (the cambelt just happens to be due around the same time, say you do 10k miles a year you will be on 40k at the 4 year interval when the cambelt is due). Had my 40k service in December and I cant quite remember the cost but was about £320 (I've got shocking memory ). So I have effectively spent £620 :o in 4 months on service work (and thats without the DSG service am Im running a manual stick)

You say they do a lot,  but its only Sparks, Pollen Filter and brake fluid, i asked for the air filter to be changed too, i cant believe they reckon its good for 60,000! it must be pretty full of crap by 20000 i'd have thought. The real kick in the nuts is that i need the MOT too another 55 on top
