MK3 2.0l 8v with a mk2 PB Head
« on: 14 March 2009, 14:44 »
Hi, i've been having a look around the forum and am wondering if its possible to stick a MK2 PB Head onto my mk3 gti? I've seen loads of people sticking the mk2 head onto a mk3 block but in a mk2, but none with a mk3 GTi with a PB head.

If its possible, any help would be brilliant.

Thanks. Paul

Only real reason us MK2'ers do it is to get the 2.0l bottom end from the MK3 - whilst retaining existing management.

Why do you want to change? If its performance then ditch the car and get a 16v, if you like the 8v and want more power then get a crossflow head and put ITBs on it.

I don't think it would work as the waterways are different plus no real gain in doing it.

I wanted to do it for the extra torque to be honest, If people are getting more power by changing the block on a mk2 then I don't get why changing the head on a mk3 wouldn't work? I'm not expecting 16v figures for BHP but more torque would be brilliant as I love the bottom-middle range power, and I don't think a valver is worth the extra on insurance tbh. Thanks. Paul

There wouldn't be any extra torque.

The MK2 8v is only a 1.8 litre - but the MK3 8v block happily fits under the MK2 head. The reason MK2 owners keep their MK2 head, is so that they can retain the existing engine management, without needing to change it to MK3 management.

Ie. For me, if I was to do it, I have a mechanical injection 8v (no ECU), I have two choices, bolt on the MK3 block and get a 2.0 8v, or I take the entire MK3 engine and then have to fit the full MK3 loom, ECU and ancillaries.

The reason we keep the head is for convenience, not a huge amount else.

Get yourself a lairy cam, free-er flowing exhaust and performance panel filter and you'll free up a few ponys without it being 'too obvious'

I don't think it would work as the waterways are different plus no real gain in doing it.

2E & AGG  blocks have waterways inthe same place there is no issue,   waterways changed on the crossflow blocks but not massivly  they can be welded and drilled to make compatable quite easy.

you can retain the mk3 head on digifant 2 conversions  but it's a pain and dosent work that well, some say the PB head flows better it dose seem to make better numbers  bit thats for someone else to work out why
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

the main issue is the inlet manifold is a completly different shape, so you'll either need to change the injection system to mk2, or find some way to mount a tps to the MK2 inlet.
