Rear Brake Guard?
« on: 13 March 2009, 18:53 »
Hi,

I've had a vibration for the past couple of weeks that I thought might be a heat shield etc loose and vibrating at a certain rev level, lift off point.

Washing the car today I found what it is, I think it's this bit below. The rear brake guard(?) if that's what it's called. It has come away from it's mounting, or it's corroded so badly it has sheared off (the area circled in yellow). Also I had the rear wheel bearings tightened about four weeks ago, could this be a part that hasn't been fitted correctly again?

Looked in the Haynes manual and can't find anything specific for it.

Does anyone know what it is, what it should be attached to, easy to fit another, and is it safe to drive still? Cheers.

All it really does is save the disc from being hit by stones etc, it will be ok to drive and is easy to replace.

I thought that, but that bit on the drivers side flops around like a paper plate, on the passenger side it's solid. So it must be that bit of old metal.

Have you just double checked the heatshield as well, to make sure there's no play in it?

I would check your heatshield under the cat as well, mine was rattling due to the mount being broken.

Was it the downpipe heatshield for you? mine has come loose from the manifold - downpipe joint and is rattling around the downpipe.
Ive bought some jubilee clips that im gonna join together and i'l tighten them around the heatshield as much as possible, see if that sorts it.

No mine was the one under the cat, most of the brackets were broke and everytime I bent it away from the cat I would knock it on a speedbump and bend it back.
