gearbox info req
« on: 12 March 2009, 20:00 »
Howdy

i have recently bought a gti 16v , but it is a bit stiff goin into first and have just been to my vw speicalist for a service and asked them to have a nosy for me, they say i need a new gearbox, or can get it refurbed, they said it would prob be cheaper to get a new one second hand and would take about 3 hrs to fit, my question is, where do i find a gearbox, just places like ebay on here etc, and am i best just getting the same one again, or can i use a different gearbox which would be stronger/better etc from another make model

cheers for any info  rob

Check all the linkage first and see if that is giving you a problem.

I worked on them for 4 1/2 yrs, it is possible that the gearbox is near the end of its life, but as with anything before spending lots I would start with the basics, linkage if it was bent then it could give you problem also maybe the clutch is on its way out that will not help if it is the case, if you need a gearbox will be easy to find s/h but if it has a lot of miles it might give you issues.

so am i better gettin mine refurbed then rather than riskin buying a second hand one, to be honest i dont mind payin a bit to get it sorted, as im plannin on keep my baby forever :)  , also after coming from an s3 where a new gearbox would of prob cost me thousands a couple of hundred quid doesnt seem that bad,

If you 100% need a gearbox then go for a recon then you now its right.

at the end of the day even if the box is knackered a full gear linkage and under car housing refurbn is recommended for when the new one gets dfitted, for the sake of £20ish you cant go wrong. one of the more easier jobs on the MK2, I made a nice FAQ post on the subject :)
