Help painting! Rubbish finish.. (pics)

Hi all, I'm in the middle of attempting to re-spray my mk2 VW badge black, as well as some armour door plates black.

I sanded them all back and prepped them, primer'd them and used Hammerite Smooth black rattle can.

I've warmed the can up first and shook it for about five minutes before every coat. I've also cleared the can after every coat (spraying it upside down until the paint doesn't come out) to prevent blockages.

Sprayed with a technique I see everyone else using and haven't oversprayed (to my knowledge) but the finish just isn't smooth or good at all! It's full of "pits" on the door plate, whereas the badge is just a bumpy surface with tiny dots here and there.

I'm also struggling to get the parts in between the holes painted properly. If I try to spray into them, I end up just overspraying the front surface!

looks a bit like you got a bit of contamination but tbh iv never got on with hammerite spray

What would you suggest doing and what would you suggest buying for paint?

I was thinking of flatting it down with 1500 grit wet and dry to remove the bumps then putting another coat on?

I've never had a finish like that from hammerite - how close were you spraying / how heavy a coat were you laying down?

Best thing to do is clean all the paint off with thinners, give it a quick blast with some 400 grit w+d. give it a light coat of plastic paint adhesion spray, then give it a couple of coats of your hammerite. But spray from a minimum of 12" and don't try to cover it all up with a single spray!

Leave it for about 15 minutes between coats, applying a light coat.

Hammerite usually takes 24 hours to cure (some versions up to 3 weeks), so let it set hard, then fit it.

Thanks Ben, I'll give it a go tomorrow then. I'm spraying in my garage but I'm thinking the draught coming in from the bottom of the garage door may have something to do with it.

Spray from 12" away? I've been spraying 6" away as I thought it was 15cm! Ahh well, I'll give it another shot tomorrow then

Did you degrease the bits as it looks like silicone contamination also known as fish eyes

you need to sand it down and then apply one coat of the colour you want... makesure you are not spraying right next to the badge leave atleast 20cm when spraying... and put it in a closed box!!
this way no dust get to it while it is drying..
which is why yours looks like its bubbling... also once its dried apply laquer (spray can will do) and again put it in a closed box give it atleast 2 days to dry properly and dont touch it as it will leave smuges on the laquer...

i recomend halfords laquer its the one i use on the badges i sell and not had a complaint yet so 

i recently sold a vw golf mk2 black badge set on ebay...

as i spray the badges and sell them on for people who dont want to go through the hassle you are lol

2 days to dry, geeze what lacquer are you using? floor varnish?

as said halfords laquer.... and yes 2 days that way stay ON THE SAFE SIDE!!
