What Engine Have I Got?

I've just purchased a Small Bumper MK2 GTi 16v over the weekend, and at the time, and as far as I knew and the previous owner told me, it was an 1800 16v.

I knew it had a replacement engine in 2003, which had 34,000 miles on it (seeming quite low for an 1800?). I found the bill for this and noticed it said "2.0 16v". I find it hard to believe that the previous owner didn't know this, but he didn't seem to mention it at all?

So I'm trying to insure it today, but I'm not sure what to insure it as, how do I tell what the engine is, are there any easy differentiations from the 1800? They seem to look pretty similar to my untrained eye?

I've been looking at pictures and it seems to look quite like this 2.0 16v (with the metal inlet pipe)



Also, I used to an 1800 16v a few years back, and I'm sure that the DOHC 16v writing wasn't painted blue as with my new one?

Looks like a KR to me.

But you need to find the engine number or a big fat 2.0 moulded into the block (around the back) to confirm.  Engine number's the only way to be sure though.

could be an abf, i see it has the MK3 alternator. I can see what looks like a spare oil sensor hole on the oil filter housing, this also points to a 2.0 block but neither of these things are conclusive proof.

As DH says look for 2.0 cast on block or the engine code, this is found at the top of the block on a flat machined area between 3 & 4.

If you can see, check for a crank sensor on the front of the block, right at the bottom next to the gearbox behind the oil filter housing. another ABF givaway is if it has an alloy sump.

Engine number is the only way of telling, could be a KR (1., 9a or ABF 2.0

When you say round the back by 3 and 4, what's the best way to see this? Get it up on axle stands and get underneath? Or can I do it from on top?

sorry the 2.0 is cast on the back, engine code is on the front
if you look at the breather assembly, its just above that. not always readable though.  If you find a crank sensor then its definitly anm ABF lump, or at least a well modified late 2.0 8v MK3 lump

the block code is on the flat area just above the block breather, on that pic its the hole just below and tro the left of 2, where the wire is running across
