Death Trap
« on: 09 March 2009, 08:28 »
I bought a 1993 8v i got it off ebay, wellon the way home their was a awfull mechanical type noise from the front it sounded like a drve shaft or cv fault, any way i got on the moterway and when i got toabout 80ish i didnt here it,well later on i went out going down the road pulled out of a junction and the front nearside wheel fell off, their was only one wheel nut holding it on,the disk was all lose and not secure, the screw that secures the disk has been sheerd off at some point,so i took a nut off the other 3 wheels to get me home, although it did take a while to line the disk up as it kept moving, does anyone know what size the wheel bolts are!!,many thanks, steve.

They are M14x1.5 but if you have standard VW alloys they are a rounded taper fitting.

Hi,guyes i know its partly my fault as i should have given the car a good checking over,i am not sure if i should leave bad feedback on ebay as i dont like doing that,i have orderd a set of locking nuts i will have them to-morow,in the meantime i have 4 nuts on instead of 5 they are tight and i tried it,although the noise has gone and the steering and braking is responsive their is a binding noise from the front left brake disk when turning at low speed, the nut that secures the disk in place has sheered off,so the wheel bolts are holding the disk in place,i am not sure if this would be ok,if not i will have to try and get the old screw out so i can secure the disk, thanks to everyone for your replys.

I know Buyer Beware etc but you could have been seriously hurt as could many people around you. This seller sold you something that was clearly unroadworthy and needs to be reported but to be fair you are a doughnut for not doing basic checks.

To be fair yes maybe you should have checked but lets be honest who has ever checked the wheelnuts on a car when collecting it.

The disc screw is just to make it easy when fitting wheels. You don't need it if you don't mind chasing the holes around with a wheel bolt.

Been in a similar situation myself!

Was my old Pug 405 GTX coming back from working in Bristol. Got withing 10 miles of home on M4 and heard a noise. Sounded like bearing or something so just carried on and went to mates garage. He has a good look around and grabs wheel to check for play!
He says You numpty with a few expletives in there the bloody wheel nuts are undone!

So I sympathise!

Well, considering there was only one nut on the wheel a simple glance at them would've done the trick...  :lipsrsealed:
