Its not awful though. My commute to work involves going through the Blackwall tunnel and those of you from London will know what a nightmare it is. Easily 45 minutes of sitting in traffic. A total distance of 15 from my house and I can see 28MPG easily. It really is about how you drive it.

Also its got to be the GTI, you will love it. Get the GTI remapped and it will be quicker than the P / ED30 :D

Wow....thats impressive.  My commute is about 7 miles.  Into work involves about 15 minutes stop start through town then about 5 on a duel carriageway.  I can get about 30 if I'm gentle on the throttle on the way back from work but more like 27 on the way there.  This doesn't involve sitting in any traffic other than short roundabout queues / waiting for lights to chage.  Once there was an accident and it took me about an hour and a half, think my trip mpg was about 13!

My Mk5 gives worse mpg than my old mk4 1.8T.  Not much worse but it is noticeable.  But it is more fun

Unless you do lots of miles and pay for your own fuel its a no brainer.  GTI

i do ALOT of miles and i have a GTI, if you want a diesel mate buy a tractor!

no but seriously, as said you will regret buying the GT170, one of the guys in work has one, in summary as i have driven it the general build quality of interior is not as good, i.e. more plastic not much brushed alu. seats not as comfortable, wheels arent as nice etc etc all adds upto one thing....

get the GTI!

As said, go for the GTI.
The devil is in the detail, the GTI has a few nice exterior bits to set it off but the really good stuff (apart from under the bonnet) is inside. Unique seats, black headliner, different steering wheel and dials, gearknob, pedals, alu trim etc etc etc. Would cost ££££ and many hours to get the GT upto GTI spec inside even if the engine can be modified for similar performance.
