Starter Motor Help!
« on: 07 March 2009, 18:43 »
Hi Everyone,

I grabbed a second mk2 jointly recently, with my bro as a project
(Pics coming soon)

First things first, the car wasnt starting up and kept "ticking/clicking" from the starter motor.
I managed to start her up last week with a few knocks on the motor but she hasnt started since.

Bought a Bosch starter motor from GSF yesterday and got stuck in.
Got the bugger in finally (classic geabox slump downwards because it was not jacked properly underneath).
Heres the bad news, tried starting her up and im still getting the clicking??

I have not tightened up the bolts completely but noticed that the new starter motor had this "rubber seal" on the inside.
Please see pic below for refference:

Should i remove this?? Additionaly, do i have to grease the insides?

All help much appreciated, car currently on axle stands!

Thanks in advance,

Goops

Cheers Danny and Oak,

I topped the batt up with distilled water and left it to charge for now..
I will pop over to halfords in the morning and hopefully it fires up

With regards to the "seal" i mentioned before, does this need removal?

Thanks,
G

Its either that or the bell housing bush is worn and the starter is making a crappy conduction.

If the battery is a healthy 12v when the headlights are on main beam - then it should be alright. My advice would be to remove the starter motor again and remove and replace the bell housing bush.

tighten them

they earth the starter to the gearbox

if the rubber seal is causing a problem youve either got the wrong starter or if it pulls off easily pull it off

check your earths and lives are clean / tight and the battery is good :)

sucess with it mate

Right, in the morning i found that my visiting 3 year old nephew had switched all switches off in the house the night before!
Battery didnt get charged, my bro went halves and bought a optima red top battery, i tried fitting this baby in the evening and its friggin huge, doesnt fit???

The bottom battery clamp just about grips onto the battery (which does not have a wedge to clamp on to) but the main prob was the + and - leads, they wont reach?! Might just return it and get bosch silver from ecp tommorow lunch time?

Red tops are like 200 notes!?! Unless you're running some serious power sapping goodies, the silver should be more than up to the job.

Failing that, if you still want big power, get a diesel battery, you'd get away with fitting a 60Ah in there.
