There's something terribly wrong with my lights
« on: 06 March 2009, 10:22 »
Totally gutted, had a prang last night, annoyingly had only just changed the lights and grill at the weekend.
Will have to wait and see what the loss adjuster says, might have to make a deal with the insurance company, as it looks to me like it's fixable for not too much money, but the insurance might want to declare it a write off.

The person in front proved to be a very useful brake :(

Is my fault, distracted on a mini roundabout by people not signalling, seeing a this road closed sign, wet/slippy roads and the car in front had stopped.

On the positive side, it drove home alright, no obvious structural damage, but can't get the bonnet open atm, and did notice this morning that the bumper on the offside appear slightly raised.

Well hope you can keep the car man, don't let the insurance company write it off.

I would think they will write that off to be honest.

That's pretty much what I can see, except the o/s wing is dented, you can the white splodge just under the headlight,
The slam panels certainly gone, as the bonnet catch & latch is twisted about 45o, one of the spots if smashed, but I may have a replacement for that, need to see how well it matches the the other one. (I'm a bit of a perfectionist ;))

I did notice this morning that the bumper doesn't look quite level, will check tomorrow when I've got time and daylight.

Don't really know damage until I can look at subframe/chassis legs, don't want to pop the bonnet until get it to body shop for estimate, although I've probably got more than enough gaff tape ;)

I've got a ton of grills, but probably not an oem 5 slat, the one I'd just put on was perfect, had been intending to pull the metal and get it ready for painting :S

I'll let you know about quad grille as soon as I have more info.

Well as expected the insurance company want to declare it a total loss.
Which means that I'm going to fix it myself, currently working out what parts I need.

Obviously I need a bonnet, slam panel & wing, but I noticed that there's some bits behind the grille in front of the radiator that need replacing, dunno what there called.

Also as I don't expect I'll get body panels to match colour (Schwartz) I'll have to get them resprayed. Does it matter what colour the panels are to start with, as in would certain colours need more paint layers to cover?
Are all mk2 body parts the same i.e. pre/post 90's

And how do I get the bumper (big) off?

I think I'm right in saying this: don't get white or red panels. From what I've heard, they are the hardest to paint over, i.e. will need more layers. I see on shows like Pimp My Ride (lol I know it's not really a good starting point but hey) they usually start off with a black basecoat and go over it, so I'm assuming the darker colors wont pose as much a problem
