Hi, everything you need to know is here -

They're both brilliant cars. It's down to how much you can afford really. The R32 is more than twice the price of a 1.8T.

Me and my friends talk about this a lot.
The benifits of R32 are:
Different kits
Sound of the engine
little bit of speed increase
Downside
Expensive on fuel
More expensive to buy
insurance is higher
I always say that I would rather a 1.8 with a re-map with official R32 kits from VW as it can be quicker than a R32, possibly the same or cheaper fuel, cheaper insurance depending on how your with and looks just as nice.
It all boils down to wheather your a R32 enthusiast or not basically, because if your not then its probably better you go for the 1.8 with the kits and a remap.
Thats my 2 cents on it anyway.

I would go for a GTI in place of a R32.

The padawan knows not the thin ice he treads on!!! Ask Phil Mc.
I would go for the R32 if I could EASILY afford it, i.e. you earn enough to not worry about the greater servicing & parts cost. You would be getting a luxury motor with awesome pace and four wheel drive for when its wet.
Realisitcally, I would get the GTI as its got 95% of the performance but is cheaper to run.
