Mine did that, so I've fired some smaller screws into the bungs at and angle next to the rusted up screws for now.

I will get some new bungs one day and do the job right. As for getting the old ones out, how about attacking them with a soldering iron from inside? That would be a bit more controlable than a hot air gun

you could just replace the plastic bungs, they're pence from vw.  I have some o them nice plate surrounds to go on, saves messin about wi tape :)

The plastic bungs are the circular bits about the size of a 5p coin holding the screw in? They will just come out if heated? Think you said they were square before which has me confused

they are square on the back, with a round face. if the screw is removed they just push out from behind. in fact i cant see why they wouldnt push out even if the screw was still in there, IIRC they dont expend or anything as the screw is threaded in...

Yeah you can pop them out with the screw still inside. Can't believe all this talk of drilling stuff out for this

Ok thanks. What is the deal with removing the plastic cover at the base of the inside of the boot lid, there are about 6  blank plastic heads. Are you just supposed to lever them out with a flat head?

CAREFULLY lever and pull the panel away. and the plugs will pop out.

Try to hold your hand under them cos the little buggers fly out and get lost. You can still buy them for a few pence from the dealers if any do make a successful break for freedom.

How easy are the new inserts to fit? Do they just pop in or is there a trick to it?

Im sick of my plate holder falling down on one side where its stuck up with double sided tape
