URGENT headgasket help needed

Been doing the headgasket on my MK2 today, all going smoothly till putting the head back on, my headgasket appears to be incorrect.  Its a BGA gasket and is listed as for the MK2 PB, which mine is, but look at the coolant channels in the block and then look at the small holes in the head gasket.  Is this normal on these?

I did the head gasket on an XUD Diesel citroen ZX which had the same problem, i fitted the gasket and its worked spot on since so mabey thats how it should be?  but.. saying that the one on my 1.8L MK3 golf fitted perfectly with all the correct grooves... so that still doesnt really help you much  :grin:

Cheers man, glad to hear that as ive just torque it down! The Camberley auto factors head set i have been supplied is abosolute crap! 2 of the holes for the rocker cover gasket dont align, a further 3 arent even cut into the cork and the rubber bits either end are too big! O.E gasket set my arse!  :grin: Am i right in thinking a 2.0 8v mk3 rubber rocker cover gasket will fit ok?

Your not wrong, but one would assume when something is said to be an o.e product it would be correct, just hope that headgaskets ok.

I'm assuming it's so the coolant doesn't get to "congested" or whatever you'd call it, with liquid. Did mine recently, looks same as mine

thats nice to hear.  Not to worry on the mk3 rocker cover gasket question.  Done a search, think ile stick with the £2.50 cork jobby

I got the MK3 rubber rocker gasket - it was £8 from GSF, the metal/rubber hybrid. You'll need new bolts for it if you have studs because they have a small shoulder on them which stops the metal gasket from sitting flush.

I cheaped out and removed the studs with an extractor, then just used the studs as bolts and screwed them in from the top - they're plenty long enough.

Also, the rubber MK3 sump gasket also fits, again metal/rubber hybrid from GSF ~ £10.

even the vw gaskets dont line up with the waterways perfectly
