Petrol station car wash
« on: 27 February 2009, 13:36 »
I might be shouted off this forum for even bringing these up, but what are people's opinions of modern service station automatic car washes?  There seem to be some very fancy, advanced looking ones around the place.

I've only just got my black mk5 GTI and it's starting to look like it needs a wash.  I'm of a lazy disposition (and I live in an apartment, so washing my car in the driveway isn't exactly an option) so I'm considering just using one of these fancy looking car washes.  Do I need talking out of it?

yes big time  ive been telling customers for 14 years never use an automatic car wash, they can damage or wreck wiper blades/arms etc and wing mirrors, the main damage is done to the paint due to the brushes getting clogged with grit and contaminants from X amount of cars being washed through the machine on a daily basis, the chemicals they use in the machine is highly concentrated and can dull your paint if not rinsed off properly which in those machines they dont rinse your car properly.

if you've got a friend or family member that would let you do it on there drive etc i'd recomend that.

I drove past one in perth that was 100% non-contact. It was a myriad of jet washer nozzles.

There's no risk of scratching from brushes on them ;) Just that pressure washers do a crap job on removing dust.

I never used auto ones though, too afraid after that story of chavs attaching bolts to the spinning brushes...

The thing that scratches paint is mostly the dirt in a sponge/mit.  SO if you think how many filthy cars will have been in the car wash.  Then think how much dirt will be in the brushes.  Then never wash your car in a car wash...

As said before. Crap detergents, grit on the brushes and poor rinsing can only result in scratches and swirls.

Garage pressure washes are a waste of time. You can do a good job with just the lance cos all that does is moves the dirt around, and the brushes will have undoubtedly been dropped on the floor by people before you.

Hand car washes can be just have bad. Most of them still use sponges, and if they do use mits they are never washed out, and lets face it, it they're washing 4-5 cars an hour, they're not going to be that fussy.

Best bet it to leave it until you are able to do it yourself properly. A dirty car will always look better than one that has been cleaned badly.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

i honestly don't know what to write...

something witty like - please go to the i'm too lazy to clean my car properly section

something sensible like - please don't use a car wash... it'll ruin your paint

something sarcastic - please go ahead and use one, they are fine and lovingly caress your paintwork like the velvety touch of angelic virgins

or - just ask andywash, he likes carwashes.. a lot!
