So if the numbers are bigger what does that mean?? For example...what are the difference's between these gearboxes??

Tranny Code                  FinalDrive 1st    2nd   3rd  4th  5th
AGB, 2Y (16v Close Ratio)    3.67    3.45  2.12  1.44 1.13 0.91
AUG (1.8 8v 90's G/J)          3.67    3.45  1.94  1.44 1.13 0.89

say mine's the bottom one

You can always fit the 16v gearbox and change the 5th gear for that out of a 4e gearbox or a toledo diesel. That would drop your RPM down to about 3200 at 80mph, from 4000rpm. I did this on my old 8v. It was great. Saved fuel too, on a run.

higher numbers mean shorter gears, go back to the site and try out the funky gear calculator :)
from that you can see the 8v AUG has a taller 2nd and 5th gear compred to the 16v 2Y.

danny thats impressive work!  1st time I've heard of that happening, did anything else go pop as well?

DarnPB: not as simple as that I'm afraid, 2y and MK3 2.0 GTI 8v boxes have a different 5th gear setup, which means you cant fit 'normal' 8v gears onto it.  2Y and MK3 GTI 5th will fit a normal 8v box though.  Best you can do on a 2Y box is fit the MK3 GTI 5th to it :)

edit: taller meaning lower rpm at given road speed, so you can get a higher speed in 2nd and 5th using an AUG box than a 2y box :)

I stand corrected.
I dragged a 5th gear from a 4e gearbox and fitted it to my 8v. I didn't know there was too much difference between 8v and 6v gearboxes.

Who's? Mine? I hope not! I left it parked at the outlaws house with a cover over it a couple of weeks ago...here in Spain! :undecided:
I better go and check see if it's still there!

not a missive difference, what it is the 2Y stylee gear has a groove cut into it, and uses a different circlip.  It'll fit an 8v box no bother using the 8v curclip, but you cant do it the other way as the 16v circlip is a different thickness, and the 8v gear has no groove to properly secure the 16v circlip.  its easier to just look at brokes site, much easirt to see what I meran from his piccies:
